The Communities of Jouberton and Matlosana, in General, Warmly Welcomed a Dialogue On Prevention Of Violence Against Vulnerable Groups

The community of Jouberton Township was almost brought to a standstill when they openly welcomed the much anticipated dialogue on prevention of violence against vulnerable groups that was held at Jouberton community Hall in Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District last Thursday 21st November 2019.

Department Of Community Safety And Transport Management, South African Police Service, Community Policing Forum, Matlosana Local Municipality, Department of Social Development, Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Legal Aid Board, Sisonke Movement, Office Of the Premier and Commission for Gender Equality joined hands in coordinating and implementing this dialogue as a build up towards 16 Days of activism to NO violence against women and children
Lerato Ramagaga from Directorate of Crime Prevention in Department of Community Safety and Transport while outlining the purpose of the dialogue, emphasized that gender based violence is a widespread problem in South Africa, impacting on almost every aspect of life hence a multi-disciplinary engagement in the form of a dialogue to share experiences and raise awareness in the community in order to curb the atrocities committed against them.

Speakers after speaker from Millicent Maropefela of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer community (LGBTQ), Thabiso Mooketsi from Albanism Society and Thoko Mdluli from Sisonke Movement as well as the People living with disability, all spoke with one clear voice. Their message is that their communities need to accept them for who they are. Members of the community must stop the violence against these vulnerable groups. Sadly, this violence is motivated by hateful attitudes towards people with albinism, people with disability and people with a different sexuality or gender identity.
The speakers further emphasized that they too are human beings like all of us who deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. They strongly urged the government to take firm punitive actions against those who discriminate, assault, rape and murder particularly gays, lesbians and transgender people.
It was truly an intense dialogue amongst people who are at the coal face of the problem. Community members and the attendees in general shared heart-wrenching experiences as they related sordid instances and examples of attacks and discrimination in society, social gathering, work and attitude the go through, sometimes.
Some, unfortunate myths and stereotypes were unpacked, clarified and the community members in attendance were reached out to, empowered and made to understand the difficulties faced by the vulnerable groups in various communities. Many of these community members confessed to be seeing for the first time the depth of hurt and sadness these vulnerable groups are subjected. And they committed to changing the status quo through warning their neighbours and people in general against treating these groups with strange attitude and hatred. The community at large, not only families and neighbours and colleagues, will appreciate, love, support and stand by the LGBTQ people.
